The FOSSIL is a program for the measuring of the mackerel reflection (usually vitrinite) with a digicam. Your digicam shows the video on the monitor in high definition. You can take readings anywhere in the picture you want. FOSSIL carries out a semi-automatic analytical procedure in conjunction with a scan table.

Conventional instruments need a measuring at a certain point and do not give any response about the actual location. The FOSSIL, however, because the entire area of the picture is fully calibratable, allows the operator to select the measuring point with the cursor anywhere in the view.

With FOSSIL the pointer provides an exact measurem. In addition, when saving an entire picture during the scan, the range that has been captured and the magnification in the picture are highlighted. The fact that the readings are taken on the monitor means that no observation of the eyepieces is required, so that the operator can assume a physical working posture that makes working with FOSSIL less stress.

FOSSIL lets you choose the measuring range between 3 x 3 and 15 x 15 pixel. Greater measuring range results in lower levels of noisiness and higher resolutions. A small measuring range makes it easy to place the measuring point in non-homogeneous specimens.
